Located
in the southern state of India, Kerala, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is situated
at a distance of 40 kms from Thodupuzha. This sanctuary extends over the Thodupuzha
and Udumpanchola taluks of Idukki district spreading over 77sq. kms, at 450
- 748m above sea level. Located in the southern state of India, Kerala, Idukki
National Park is one of Kerala's finest havens for wildlife and is home to vast
herds of Elephants, bisons, bear, wild boars, sambar wild dogs, jungle cats,
tiger, wild boar and has a very large concentration of various species of snakes
including cobra, viper, kraits and numerous non-poisonous ones.
The bird life in
the sanctuary is equally impressive. Important birds include myna, jungle fowl,
black bulbul, laughing thrush, woodpecker, peafowl, kingfisher etc. The Idukki
reservoir formed by three dams-Cheruthoni, Idukki and Kulamavu - extends to 33
sq. km. A picturesque lake, a majestic arch dam across two hills and roaming herds
of elephants and gaur are sights that lure you to this enchanting canopy of tropical
semi-evergreen and deciduous forests. The fauna also includes Langur, Leopard
and Wild Boar.
Wild Population of Idukki Wildlife
Sanctuary The sanctuary has a large variety of flora and fauna. Among
the mammals, Elephants, Wild Dogs, Jungle Cats, Tiger, Wild Boar, Bison, Sambar,
Deer, etc reptiles such as Cobra, Viper, Krait and a large number of non- poisonous
snakes can be seen. Jungle Fowl, Myna, Laughing Thrush, Kingfisher, Black Bulbul,
Peafowl, Woodpecker, etc. also inhabit the place in large numbers. In short, it
may be said that rich wildlife and scenic beauty make the Idukki National Park
one of the best game viewing destinations in the state of Kerala. The sanctuary
is easily accessible from all the places of India.

Bird Sanctuary, situated on the picturesque banks of the Vembanad Lake is known
for its varied avian population. Known as an ornithologist's paradise, the bird
sanctuary spreads over an area of 14 acres. Set amidst the lush wooded land, the
sanctuary provides the close view of the variety of migratory birds that come
from Himalayas or far places like Siberia. Local varieties such as waterfowls,
cuckoos and owls, as well as the migratory Siberian Cranes can be viewed here.
The natural beauty and varied activities of native Kingfishers, Egrets, Herons,
Golden-Backed Woodpeckers and acrobatics of the paradise Fly-catchers fascinate
the visitors.
The Kumarakom Tourist Complex, sprawling over 101 acres of
enchanting wooded land and lake, was built around the 50-year-old 'Baker's Mansion',
which was earlier a small hotel run by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation
(KTDC). Now the complex has been renovated in grand style by the Taj Kerala Resorts
Ltd. The best way to watch the avian population of the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
is a boat trip round the islands. Boats are available on hire for a cruise around
the sanctuary.
Viewing The Wild - Kumarakom Bird
Sanctuary Houseboats and motor boats are available on hire for bird
watching cruises on the lake.
Wild Population of
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary The main attractions are local birds like
the owl, egret, heron and the water duck, water fowl, cuckoo, as well as the migratory
Siberian cranes. Parrots, flycatchers, wood beetle, teal, larks, and other birds
are seen here during their respective migratory seasons.
Best
Time To Visit The best time to bird watch is between June and August.
To watch Migratory birds, November to February is the best time.
